Abolition Movement

In the late 19th century, Fortaleza became a center for abolitionist activity. Intellectuals and activists gathered to advocate for the end of slavery, culminating in Ceará becoming the first Brazilian province to abolish slavery in 1884. This progressive spirit became a proud part of Fortaleza's identity.
