City Day and St. Nicholas Day

Every year at the beginning of December, Komiža celebrates its day and the feast of Saint Nicholas, the patron saint of the town, sailors, fishermen and travelers. This holiday, which is celebrated on the sixth of December, has a special meaning for the people of Komiža. It is a combination of faith, tradition and respect for the sea that has shaped the life of this place for centuries. The central event of the celebration is the burning of an old wooden ship in front of the church and monastery of Saint Nicholas on the Muster hill. This ancient custom, known as the "Fire of St. Nicholas", dates back to the time when ships were the heart of Komiža's life. In Komiža, a ship has always been considered a member of the family, a companion and guardian of life at sea, it is baptized, given a name and when it comes to an end, it is sent off with fire into a new life cycle. The flame that engulfs the ship symbolizes gratitude and prayer for the safe return of sailors and the blessing of new ships and the fishing season. That moment, when the fire rises towards the sky, connects the past and the future, keeping alive the heritage of generations of Komiža fishermen and shipbuilders. In addition to the rituals, the celebration of the City Day brings a rich program: from the traditional regatta of singles and doubles, sports competitions, exhibitions, plays and workshops for children, to evenings of local creativity, concerts and socializing with homemade wine. More than thirty different events enliven the streets and waterfront of Komiža, creating a special atmosphere of togetherness and pride. The feast of St. Nicholas in Komiža is not just a celebration, but a living story about the sea, tradition and identity. The fire of St. Nicholas still burns today as a symbol of gratitude, faith and the continuous connection of the people of Komiža with the sea that has shaped them over the centuries.
