The national monument Haraldshaugen is a memorial erected to commemorate Harald Fairhair’s unification of Norway in 872. The monument consists of a large obelisk surrounded by 29 smaller stones, one for each of the old counties of Norway. Around the monument, there are beautiful green areas, ideal for picnics and recreation. Here, you can also explore informative plaques that describe historical events related to the site and simply relax and enjoy a great view of the North Sea. Harald Fairhair was Norway’s first king, known for unifying the country into one kingdom after the Battle of Hafrsfjord in 872. He reigned from around 872 to 930.
