The Sanden museum

0

Sanden museum consists of five buildings; farmhouse, barn, storehouse, jetty, and boathouse. The farmhouse was built by grocer Jonas Nideros first in the 1790s. The other buildings were most likely built at the same time. The people who lived in Sanden did not have the status or function as owners of Veiholmen. But the family lived as owners, fishermen, and traders here. This provided them with economic and social freedom, regardless of the decree and prohibition given by the owners of the fishing village. Today Sanden is owned and drifted by Smøla museum. The museum was purchased after Astrid Eckhoff died in 1983. And it's quite a unique cultural history museum. When you enter Sanden, it seems like time has been standing still. The buildings are in their original state, nothing is taken away and nothing is added. The boats are still in the boathouse along with fishing gear. It's almost as a time capsule. The people who lived here were frugal and looked well after their belongings. The museum tells the visitors a unique story of agriculture, fishing, emigration, commerce and daily life at the very end of the North Sea coast in the 19th and 20th centuries.
